  • Oil’s big swings are the new normal

Volatility is roiling the oil market, luring traders in search of quick profits but discouraging longer-term investors who had grown accustomed to more muted swings. Crude prices tumbled Thursday to their lowest levels in nearly a month after data released Wednesday showed inventories continuing to swell. • China’s yuan slumps on growth worries

China’s yuan fell to its weakest level against the dollar in more than two years on Friday, extending a decline driven by the prospect of a slowdown in the world’s second-largest economy. Investors have been selling the yuan in recent months amid a flurry of disappointing economic indicators out of China, which have raised expectations that Beijing could devalue the tightly controlled currency to stoke growth. Meanwhile, money managers see a steady recovery and higher short-term interest rates in the U.S., bolstering the allure of the dollar. (Fuente: The Wall Street Journal, 27/02/2015)

  • India says economic growth could reach 8.5%

India’s Finance Ministry said Friday that the country’s economic growth could accelerate to as much as 8.5% in the coming fiscal year, which could make it the world’s fastest-growing large economy as China’s expansion continues to slow. Officials cautioned, however, that recent changes in the way Indian-government statisticians estimate gross domestic product, which caused recent growth figures to be revised upward considerably, make it “difficult to objectively analyze” longer-term trends at present. • Fallings Chinese coal consumption and output undermine global market

China’s coal consumption and production fell last year for the first time in 14 years, confirming a trend that has become one of the heaviest weights sinking the global coal market. Barnes & Noble Inc. said Thursday it plans to spin off its college bookstore business into a separate publicly traded company by the end of August, but the company’s plans to revitalize its Nook digital business remained unclear. • Gas’s Drop drives U.S into deflation territory

The U.S. in January saw its first dip in overall consumer prices in more than five years. But the economy is far from the precipice of debilitating Japanese-style deflation. • Job market perks up for recent college graduates

The job market for fresh college graduates is improving—as is the method for measuring the success of graduates. Just more than half of the nearly 67,000 members of the class of 2014 who responded to a survey had landed full-time jobs within six months of donning their caps and gowns.
