The Fed isn’t oil’s friend

The Federal Reserve’s artful dodge on raising rates gave oil prices a boost Wednesday afternoon. Its real favor to oil investors, though, was demonstrating how little support low rates really offer: Prices slumped again Thursday morning. Indeed, lower interest rates are a hindrance to a recovery in oil prices. That might sound counterintuitive. After all, lower U.S. interest rates tend to weaken the dollar, support emerging markets, and tempt investors into riskier assets, all of which normally supports oil. Preparing for a Brent Benchmark with no Brent oil

It was once a behemoth, a massive North Sea oil field whose importance to the world crude market was summed up by its name atop the global benchmark price: Brent. Today, the Brent field, northeast of Scotland’s remote Shetland Islands, is all but tapped dry. It produces about 1,000 barrels a day in a global market of 93 million daily barrels. Royal Dutch Shell PLC is awaiting approval to scrap the first of four Eiffel Tower-sized platforms that have sucked Brent-branded crude from the seabed for almost 40 years. Feeling stout? Diageo to list calorie counts

Diageo PLC is following the lead of the food industry by offering calorie counts and other content information on many of its biggest-selling products, from Johnnie Walker Scotch whisky to Smirnoff vodka. Lily joins with Chinese biotech to develop, market cancer drugs

Eli Lilly & Co. agreed to form one of the broadest collaborations to date between a large Western drug maker and a Chinese biotechnology company, a sign of the pharmaceutical industry’s interest in the Chinese market despite recent growing pains. Germany’s Merkel Intervenes in Greek rift with creditors

Elon Musk say self-driving Tesla cars will be in the U.S. by summer

Biogen reports its Alzheimer’s drug sharply slowed cognitive decline

An experimental drug for Alzheimer’s disease sharply slowed the decline in mental function in a small clinical trial, researchers reported Friday, reviving hopes for an approach to therapy that until now has experienced repeated failures. The drug, being developed by Biogen Idec, could achieve sales of billions of dollars a year if the results from the small trial are replicated in larger trials that Biogen said it hoped to begin this year.
