China’s factories losing steam

HSBC said that its "flash" measure of sentiment among purchasing managers in China's vast manufacturing sector dipped to a seven-month low of 49.5 in December. The preliminary reading was lower than analysts had expected, and raises a red flag about economic growth and demand for oil in the world's biggest importer. Airlines get $1 billion from baggage fees

All together the 27 U.S. airlines took in a total of $960 million from baggage fees last quarter, according to data released by the Department of Transportation Monday. That's an increase of almost 9% from a year ago. The baggage fees are still just a fraction of airlines' revenue. Actual ticket fares brought in $34 billion for the same 27 companies in the quarter. And the collection from baggage fees alone don't cover the cost of fuel, which totaled about $11 billion over three months, or labor costs, which amounted to more than $10 billion. Russia heading for crash as ruble plummets

The ruble plunged by about 12% Monday, meaning it's lost nearly 50% against the dollar this year. Early Tuesday in Russia, the central bank hiked its key interest rate for a sixth time this year to 17% from 10.5%. A double-whammy of collapsing oil prices and Western sanctions is driving up inflation. Cash is flooding out of the country and the risk that some Russian companies may default is increasing. Russia's central bank has not only been raising interest rates, but has spent nearly $90 billion trying to defend the ruble and prevent prices spiraling out of control. For some hotel employees, it’s home for the holidays

Hotel employees often do not spend the holidays at home with their families. They are in the travel business, after all, a year-round industry. Recently, though, some hotels have started closing their doors to give employees time off at Christmas. The 177-room Adoba Hotel in Rapid City, S.D., had been through a long renovation in 2013 and its general manager, Stacie Hull, wanted to reward her employees as the year came to a close. U.A.W Pledges to pursue higher wages next year

With auto sales booming and domestic carmakers earning healthy profits, the United Automobile Workers union will be seeking wage increases for its members in contract talks in 2015. Dennis Williams, the U.A.W.’s new president, said on Monday that workers at General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler deserve a larger share in the success of the companies, particularly after the union has held the line on wages in previous contracts and agreed to lower pay for entry-level jobs. Study to examine effects of Artificial Intelligence

Oil prices plunge with Brent crude below $60

Oil prices continued to tumble Tuesday on weak economic data out of Europe and China, with Brent crude falling below $60 a barrel for the first time since May 2009. Crude has fallen by close to 50% since June to levels not seen since the depths of the global recession. U.S Industrial Production surpasses prerecession peak

U.S. manufacturing output climbed past its prerecession peak this fall, suggesting the American economy is on solid footing despite growing signs of weakness abroad. Factory output climbed 1.1% in November, the Federal Reserve said Monday, while October’s figure was revised up to a 0.4% gain from a previously reported 0.2% increase. U.S Stocks fall along with oil prices

U.S. stocks fell Monday amid a continuing slump in oil prices and ahead of a closely watched Federal Reserve meeting. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 99.99 points, or 0.6%, to 17180.84. France plans to block uber “ride sharing” service

Uber Technologies Inc.’s regulatory problems deepened Monday when France became the latest country to say it would ban one of the car-hailing company’s main services. Meanwhile, taxis took to the streets in a protest against the U.S. company’s “unfair competition.” The French government said the company’s Uberpop service that uses drivers without professional licenses is “illegal.” Officials said they would move quickly to apply a new transport law that will take effect on Jan. 1 and stiffens penalties for operating such services. EU approves Holcim, Lafarge cement merger

Cement companies Holcim Ltd. and Lafarge SA cleared a major hurdle toward their planned $43 billion merger after antitrust authorities in Europe said the deal could go ahead, subject to significant asset sales across the region. Japan’s Abe vows to push for wage increases

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Monday he would press companies to raise wages next year, seeking to build on a decisive election victory and counter critics who say his policies don’t benefit average people. China to revise GDP estimate for 2013

China will revise the estimated size of its economy by 3% in 2013, even as weak factory numbers released Tuesday showed the world’s second-largest economy continues to struggle. The revision, which is lower than many economists had expected, will change little in practice and likely won’t significantly affect previously reported economic growth rates. Still, it could push up the date when the size of China’s economy officially surpasses the U.S. economy and influence the debate about the size of China’s imbalances, debt and slowdown. Tiemblan mercados hacia el fin de año

La baja sostenida de los precios internacionales del petróleo ha pegado duro al peso y a la Bolsa Mexicana de Valores (BMV) en la primera mitad de diciembre. En lo que va del mes, el precio de la mezcla mexicana de petróleo de exportación cayó 27.96%, mientras que la moneda nacional se ha depreciado 5.77% y el Índice de Precios y Cotizaciones (IPC) de la Bolsa acumula una minusvalía de 8.72%. Liga segunda caída el consumo privado

Durante septiembre de 2014 el consumo privado bajó 0.56% respecto a agosto. El Indicador Mensual del Consumo Privado en el Mercado Interior (IMCPMI) sumó con ello dos bajas a tasa mensual, debido a la reducción en los dos principales componentes que lo integran. Los números del Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía indican que la contracción en ese indicador experimentó en el octavo mes de 2014 se cifró en 0.25%, por lo que la variación negativa de septiembre se erigió en la más pronunciada en los últimos seis meses. Gruma duplicará producción en Rusia

Alza del dólar elevará ingresos del gobierno por exportación de crudo

El alza del dólar frente al peso equivaldrá a más recursos derivados del petróleo para 2015, puesto que el paquete económico de ese año fue hecho con un tipo de cambio promedio de 13.4 pesos por dólar, por lo que una depreciación de 60 centavos implicaría ingresos excedentes por 14 mil 179 millones de pesos. Empresas aumentan sueldo en 4.4% en 2014

De enero a noviembre de este año, las empresas otorgaron un aumento salarial de 4.4%, el aumento más bajo desde 2009 en el que están incluidos trabajadores de sindicatos como la CTM y UNT que tienen contratos colectivos con organizaciones como Coparmex y Concamin. Ven arroz de Vietnam en el TPP

Con la restitución de aranceles a las importaciones de arroz, Vietnam, uno de los principales exportadores de este cereal a México, buscará negociar este producto en el marco del Acuerdo de Asociación Transpacífico (TPP). A partir de enero entrará en vigor un arancel del 20 por ciento para las importaciones de arroz pulido y de 9 por ciento para el arroz palay proveniente de naciones con las que México no tiene tratados comerciales, lo cual afectará principalmente a Tailandia y Vietnam, a los que México compra alrededor de 100 mil toneladas de este producto.
