Opinion: Wearables will explode after Apple Watch debut

Yes I know, wearables like Google Glass didn't do very well in their initial launch. The current crop of smartwatches and fitness bands are good, but they're not exactly mainstream. But I believe Apple's smartwatch will provide the necessary momentum to get people using wearables, in spite of all the naysayers. When Apple (AAPL, Tech30) launched the first iPad, many said it was just a big iPod Touch and would not take off. U.S Consumer spending falls in January

U.S. consumer spending opened the year with its second straight monthly drop, though a gain in inflation-adjusted outlays suggests Americans are still benefiting from lower gas prices. Personal spending, which measures outlays for everything from washing machines to manicures, fell 0.2% in January to mark only the second drop in the past year, the Commerce Department said Monday. Savings at the Pump become savings at the bank

Few Americans are benefiting from the swift decline in gasoline prices as much as Rodger Hedrick and the 24,000 other residents of Hickman County. Mr. Hedrick is a typical worker in this sprawling, rural community southwest of Nashville: He commutes roughly two hours a day for work, and he spent more than $12,000 last year on gasoline, far exceeding his mortgage bill. Cheaper gas has effectively given Mr. Hedrick, who says his income as the owner of a pressure-washing business has stagnated for a decade, a sudden 15% raise, or $300 extra a month. Greece faces cash crunch as IMF payments come due

Greece faces a cash crunch in the coming weeks with little hope of financial help soon from the rest of the eurozone, threatening a serious blow to the country’s fragile economy. Though the Greek government secured an extension of its bailout program last week, that doesn’t give Athens access to cash pledged to it from the eurozone and the International Monetary Fund. To unlock that money, it will need to agree on a revised program of austerity measures and economic overhauls with its creditors, and pass them into law. Costco Names Citi, Visa as new credit partners

H-P to buy Aruba Networks for $2.7 billion

Hewlett-Packard Co. agreed to acquire wireless-networking company Aruba Networks Inc. in a deal valued at roughly $2.7 billion, expanding H-P’s capabilities in the mobile market. H-P is offering $24.67 a share, a 1% discount to Aruba Network’s close on Friday, when the stock reached the highest level in nearly two years following a report about a possible deal. Microsoft plays waiting game in smartphone race

Microsoft Corp. has a new fix-it plan for the company’s smartphone business: Wait a little longer. Microsoft’s $9.4 billion purchase last year of Nokia Corp. ’s mobile-phone business was billed as a way to revive Windows Phone, the company’s four-year-old smartphone operating software. So far, Microsoft has fallen further behind. The share of smartphones shipped last year that were Windows Phone devices slipped to 2.7% from 3.3% in 2013, according to research firm IDC. Two Russian Beverage plants close

PepsiCo Inc. and Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Co. AG are closing one plant each in Russia, citing a plunge in the value of the Russian ruble and an unfavorable economic situation. The two are the latest food and drink companies to cut production in Russia as the country slides into recession. In January, Danish brewer Carlsberg A/S said it would be closing two plants in Russia, and Danone Russia said it would consider closing some of its dairy plants should the economic situation worsen. The Mumbo Jumbo of Middle Class Economics

In the “Economic Report of the President” released on Feb. 19, the White House’s Council of Economic Advisers defines “middle class economics” primarily by the average income of the bottom 90%. “Average income for the bottom 90 percent of households,” according to the ERP, “functions as a decent proxy for the median household’s income growth.” This is absurd: The average income for the bottom 90% is not a decent proxy for the median nor even a decent measure of household income. Eurozone Economy firms ahead of ECB Bond buying

The decline in consumer prices moderated in Europe last month while unemployment fell to its lowest rate in nearly three years, an indication that the region’s economy is gradually finding its footing even before the European Central Bank launches a €1 trillion-plus stimulus program aimed at reducing borrowing costs and stimulating growth. The reports came three days ahead of the ECB’s regular monetary policy meeting Thursday, which will take place in euro member Cyprus. Officials are expected to refrain from any new stimulus and instead provide details on how they will execute a €60 billion-per-month asset purchase program, mostly in government bonds, later this month. U.S Manufacturing slows further in February

U.S. manufacturers stumbled in February, hurt by a mix of weakness in overseas economies and a West Coast ports slowdown. The Institute for Supply Management said Monday that supply disruptions stemming from the West Coast ports labor strife pulled down its top-line purchasing managers’ index to 52.9 in February, from 53.5 in January. A warning from Buffet about banks

“Money-shufflers don’t come cheap.” That was Warren E. Buffett’s latest salvo against Wall Street from his annual letter to shareholders published over the weekend. Britain´s still enjoying a tax break 100 years old

Sufren 'tropezón' remesas en enero

En enero de 2015, los ingresos por remesas familiares presentaron una ligero descenso de 0.70 por ciento hacia México. Estos ingresos tenían 17 meses con alzas a tasa anual, según datos de Banxico. Será México cuarto productor de autos en 2018

México seguirá escalando en la cadena internacional de producción de automóviles, al grado de que para 2018 podría ser el cuarto productor más importante sobre el séptimo sitio que ocupa hoy, proyecta la consultora E&Y. Saca raja Gobierno a gasolina

En enero, el Gobierno no sólo dejó de subsidiar la gasolina, sino que obtuvo ingresos extraordinarios por 24 mil 137 millones de pesos por su venta. Según el informe de finanzas públicas de la Secretaría de Hacienda (SHCP), estos recursos contrastan con las pérdidas de años anteriores. Reporta Hacienda desplome de 44% en ingresos petroleros

En enero de 2015 los ingresos petroleros del sector público totalizaron 56 mil 994.8 millones de pesos, lo que significó una caída de 43.5 por ciento real anual, informó la Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público (SHCP). En su reporte del primer mes del año, dicho monto fue 41 mil 29.5 millones de pesos menor que lo recaudado por el mismo concepto en enero de 2014, y la caída se debió al descenso de 6.5% en la producción de petróleo y de 3.6% en la de gas natural, así como al menor precio de la mezcla mexicana de exportación, cuyo precio promedio fue de 52.4 dólares por barril, es decir 39.4 dólares menos que en enero de 2014. Interjet sumará 10 aeronaves a su flota

Aumenta 17 veces déficit hacendario

En el primer mes del año los ingresos presupuestarios del sector público presentaron una caída de 3.4 por ciento ante los menores entradas por exportaciones de petróleo, que se vieron afectadas por la baja en los petroprecios. Mientras tanto, el gobierno federal aumentó su gasto neto presupuestario 18.1 por ciento, lo que derivó en que se incrementara el déficit de las finanzas públicas, al pasar de los 4 mil 907 millones de pesos reportados en enero de 2014 a 91 mil 544 millones de pesos; es decir, aumentó 17 veces respecto al año pasado. Bansefi administrará los recursos del Fondo Minero

Bansefi será la banca de desarrollo encargada de llevar la cuenta del Fondo para el Desarrollo Regional Sustentable de Estados y Municipios Mineros.
