  • Deflation risk is now a worry even for China

Major economies such as Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States are all experiencing ultra-low inflation or outright price decreases. Emerging markets like Thailand are under pressure. Deflation is widespread across Europe, and prices have been sliding for years in trouble spots like Greece. Now the alarm has spread to China. The People's Bank of China slashed interest rates at the weekend to keep prices from weakening too quickly. (Fuente: CNN Money 02/03/2015)

  • Ditching your smartphone bill and going Wi-Fi only

It is almost impossible to imagine life without a cellphone. But imagining life without a cellphone bill is getting a lot easier. For 30 days beginning in January, I disconnected my iPhone from AT&T Inc. and lived entirely off the free Wi-Fi connections that are available nearly everywhere. It wasn’t exactly seamless. An effort to dump extra tickets to the NCAA College Football Championship game in Dallas was more stressful than it would have been with an always-connected phone. • Euro rebounds on upbeat data

A solid run of European data supported the euro on Monday. Early in the day, the currency took a hit from the buoyant dollar, which climbed close to an 11-year high against a number of major currencies after Beijing’s decision over the weekend to cut interest rates for the second time in less than four months, highlighting the gap in interest-rate policy between the U.S. and the rest of the world. • Should consumers mostly use credit or debit cards?

As Americans make a growing number of purchases with plastic, the question of what kind of card they use more often—credit or debit—has a clear answer. The number of purchases made with debit cards in the U.S. each year exceeded the number of purchases made with credit cards for the first time back in 2004, according to the Federal Reserve. And in 2012, debit cards were used to make 47 billion payments, compared with 26.2 billion payments made with credit cards (though the total value of credit-card purchases is higher). • FED faces foreign policy dilemma on rates

Prices in America face a stiff offshore breeze—complicating the Federal Reserve’s decisions on interest rates. Even as the U.S. economy has picked up speed and unemployment has fallen, inflation has been remarkably cool. Morgan Stanley estimates that Monday’s report on consumer prices from the Commerce Department will show that they fell 0.5% in January from a month earlier, putting them 0.1% higher year over year. • Economic forecasting with the Chicago Bears

An ill wind buffeted economic forecasters on Friday. It came not from a downward revision to fourth-quarter U.S. growth but from the Windy City. The Chicago Business Barometer, also known as the Chicago PMI, fell sharply and unexpectedly to its lowest level since July 2009, the month after the recession ended. The reading of 45.8—anything below 50 is considered a sign of contraction—compared with a forecast of 58 in a Wall Street Journal survey. (Fuente: The Wall Street Journal, 02/03/2015)

  • Samsung unveils galaxy S6 to answer iPhone 6

Samsung Electronics Co. introduced a flagship smartphone with a curved screen and mobile-payment system, seeking to spark sales after a painful year that saw its leadership eroded by Apple Inc. and Chinese upstarts like Xiaomi Corp. The new Galaxy S6 and its double curved-screen variant the Galaxy S6 Edge, released Sunday on the sidelines of an annual trade show here, outlines Samsung’s latest strategy for finding its footing: take on Apple’s iPhone head on, while bringing even more of the manufacturing process under its control. • RWE to proceed with north sea gas deal

German utility RWE AG and an energy-investment fund led by Russian billionaire Mikhail Fridman signaled on Sunday they would proceed this week with a $5.6 billion deal for oil-and-gas fields over the objections of the U.K. government. The deal to sell RWE’s oil-and-gas arm Dea would give Mr. Fridman the assets to launch a new international oil company, with fields in Britain, Norway, Denmark and Germany, and licenses to work in Algeria, Guyana, Turkmenistan and other countries. Dea produces about 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day. (Fuente: The Wall Street Journal 02/03/2015)

  • China’s rate cut renews economic concerns

A surprise rate cut by China’s central bank underscores the increasingly aggressive measures the leadership is relying on to rev up activity in the world’s second-largest economy. The rate cut shaved a quarter of a percentage point off benchmark lending and deposit rates, and came less than four months after the last reduction—sooner than many economists and analysts expected. • The Eurozone recovery means Greece has less leverage than it thinks

After weeks of brinkmanship between Greece and the eurozone, one might think the outlook for Europe was bleak. Since the election of a radical leftist-led government in Athens in January, a breakup of the supposedly irreversible single currency has looked more likely than ever. It took an 11th-hour deal finalized last week to avert imminent Greek bankruptcy—and already this fragile truce is under strain. (Fuente: The Wall Street Journal 02/03/2015)

  • Boehner pressed to break stalemate

With just days left for Republican congressional leaders to end a stalemate over homeland-security funding, House Speaker John Boehner (R., Ohio) is under increasing pressure to find a way to bridge differences in his caucus over how to push back against President Barack Obama ’s immigration policies. Divisions among House Republicans were exposed last week when restive conservatives balked at a plan backed by Mr. Boehner to pass a three-week spending bill, which GOP leaders had hoped would give them time to negotiate with the Senate on funding the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees immigration activities. • FED ushers in a new era of uncertainty on rates

Investors these days are obsessing over when the Federal Reserve will start raising short-term interest rates. Drawing less scrutiny is where rates will end up in the long run and how they’ll get there. But it’s time to start paying attention. Fed officials have made clear they expect to begin raising short-term interest rates from near-zero this year, though not before midyear. After that, there is great uncertainty at the central bank and in the markets about the future path of interest rates. (Fuente: The Wall Street Journal 02/03/2015)

  • Jobs data in Europe an U.S, and Car Sales

Reports on Monday on eurozone unemployment and consumer prices will provide a last snapshot of economic activity in the bloc before the European Central Bank undertakes a historic policy shift, moving in March to a program of large-scale bond buying to stimulate growth and hold off deflationary pressures. • Eurozone process continue to fall, fueling concerns

Europe experienced a third straight month of falling prices in February, adding to worries about possible deflation, official data showed on Monday, but the jobless rate ticked down to the lowest level since 2012, providing a welcome glimmer of hope that the economy might be picking up steam at last. Consumer prices in the eurozone fell 0.3 percent in February from a year earlier, Eurostat, the statistical agency of the European Union, reported from Luxembourg. Prices had fallen 0.6 percent in January and 0.2 percent in December. (Fuente: The New York Times, 02/03/2015)
